Overview
Sonia Khurana is a visual artist based in New Delhi, whose multifaceted practice encompasses moving image, performance, drawing, text, sound, and installation. Her work delves into themes of interiority and embodiment, exploring the self in relation to the world while critically engaging with cultural and gendered identities. Through a lens of poetic intimacy, Khurana redefines the political space, challenging conventional narratives and power dynamics.
Trained as a painter at the Delhi College of Art in the late 1980s, Khurana transitioned to lens-based practices by the late 1990s, further honing her skills at the Royal College of Art in London. Her early solo exhibition Lone Women Don’t Lie, marked a significant moment in Indian contemporary art, establishing her as a pioneer in moving image and performance. Over the years, her works have been showcased internationally in prestigious venues such as Centre Pompidou and Brooklyn Museum.
Khurana's recent exhibition Oneiric House–Round About Midnight, encapsulates her exploration of sleep and awakening through ten installations that intertwine image, music, and text. This body of work reflects her ongoing investigation into the ethical and aesthetic implications of being dormant versus vigilant in a complex world.
As an artist and educator, Khurana continues to inspire new generations through her teaching at Shiv Nadar University and guest lectures worldwide, including at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her commitment to examining the intersections of personal and collective experiences makes her a vital voice in contemporary art discourse.
Currently based in New Delhi.
