Shaheen Peer is a self-taught photographer from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, currently residing in Pondicherry, India. She holds a Graduate Diploma in Fashion Media Styling from the London College of Fashion (2014-2015) and a Bachelor of Design in Fashion Communication from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore (2009-2013).
Her work explores themes of identity and diversity, focusing on subjects that resonate with Shaheenher upbringing, particularly emphasizing strong portrayals of women. At the heart of her practice lies the subversion of conventional beauty standards. By staging her photographs, Shaheen engages with her immediate cultural landscape as a playground for investigation, characterized by vivid color, playful geometry, and a fierce gaze.
Through her photography, she questions systems of representation and creates new narratives infused with personal significance. Shaheen seeks to rethink and unlearn inherited notions of beauty, often discovering it in spaces that are frequently overlooked. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in a fascination with color, shape, body forms, and the materiality of cloth, all framed through an intentional and deliberate lens.
