The Music Makers, a MAIR Alumni Show
Date: 25th April - 25th May, 2025
"We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams..."
— Arthur O’Shaughnessy, Ode (1874)
The Music Makers presents works by alumni of the now-concluded MAIR(Mumbai Artists in Residency) program, a Gallery-supported initiative that fostered emerging artistic practices. Located near the Mumbai airport in Sakinaka, the residency offered a distinct temporal rhythm—airplanes crossing the sky and sunsets unfolding across the terrace—marking time through ephemeral encounters that subtly shaped each artist’s process. In invoking The Music Makers, the exhibition also gestures toward the broader cultural labour of rising voices: artists who, much like O’Shaughnessy’s dreamers, “build up the world’s great cities” not with stone, but with gesture, reflection, and imagination. These are practices that challenge linearity, resist commodification, and embrace ambiguity as a site of possibility. In doing so, it positions the artist as a thinker—shaping form and meaning in the margins of mainstream discourse. The Music Makers becomes a proposition for another kind of gaze, one attuned to subtlety, silence, and the potential of emerging voices to reimagine what art can be.
